Chúc Mừng Năm Mới

Last Thursday was the Lunar New Year. For the New Year, I wish everyone peace, happiness and good health.

New Hampshire doesn't have much to offer for the Asian culture. We flew to Texas to visit family and let the kids learn about Tết.

Starting off the dance

Dancing Dragons

Lighting the firecrackers

Inside the market.
The dancers go into the market as the owners greet the dragon lion. They offer lì xì to the dragon-lion. He will then throw fruit out to the people. Be careful for flying oranges. One year M got hit square in the head with an orange. I figured it was good luck.

The Meme:
* I was tagged by Ei

Five random and/or weird facts about me
* I have a thing about numbers. I find myself counting for no reason at all. If I
don't like a certain number, I'll avoid getting that amount. Whether or not I like a number can change daily. My favorite number is five. How fitting that this is a game of five.
* Currently, I have four tattoos. They each mean something to me. If I am to get branded for life, I want it to have spiritually meaning.
* When I was younger, I wanted to be an author. I now want to be a midwife and work in a third world country helping women.
* I also wanted to help safe women against FGM at one point; I still do.
* My two favorite books for the moment are The Outsiders and Of Mice and Men
Top five places I want to visit or visit again
* Vietnam (to see my family)
* Germany (to see Fred's family)
* Ireland (because an Irish accent is freaking sexy)
* Alaksa (to see the Northen Lights)
* Hawaii (where Fred and I were married)
Tag at least five friends.
* Karey
*Grechen
*Karen
*Wendy
*Alicia
I would have added more of my favorite bloggers, but then it would have gone over five. So check out my favorite blogger lists under "The lovers, the dreamers and me." Also if you're reading this, considering yourself tagged. :p
Post a comment when you do your meme and we can see how far the network can reach.

Things a Toddler Say

[After going potty.]
M: Potty is like soup!
Me: Potty is like soup?
M: Yes, soup is like carrots.
Me: Carrot soup?
M: No pea soup. (is this her first pun?)
M: B and I are peas. B pea and M pea.

Uh remind me not to eat her soup.

Dream fragments

Driving on 114. Headed back from a school play. It's raining. Fred is driving ahead of me. I see him walking towards us in his yellow coat. I drive past him and barely miss falling off an uncompleted road. We have to get home! Fred says there is no other way, but I know we can get to Irving and it's quicker than going to 35 all the way to Dallas. I stop and ask for directions.

It's a race now. We have to get off this highway before something happens. There is a line up, but I'm first in line to go through the gate. I have to call my parents to come, but they are wanting to wait. I have to get Fred to go. There really isn't room for an extra body in the car because of the car seats, so he is behind us. (Ivy and me).

I have to go back for some reason. Cars are building up, but I didn't lose my place in line. I did lose my keys! One woman is there handing out people's keys. She is doing magic tricks and the keys appear. She is annoyed with me. The magic trick involves pulling terry bands as if you're crocheting. I'm not quite able to do it right. I'm able to make a key ring appear, but that's about it. Finally she just tosses me my keys. Lots of plastic cards hanging off the keys. I guess I had to many key chains or something.

I begin racing like a video game. I'm good at the game, but I have smashed my car. We can get points to buy a new car. It's a mixed between a racing game and the tobaggon ride at Six Flags. B is in the bucket of the car strapped. I want Fred to sit with B to make sure he is safe. Fred takes over driving while I navigate.

I don't know where this fits in, but I'm up high holding B. I'm afraid we will fall. I am trying to hand B to people, but they don't want to take him. They are paranoid about dropping him. I remember handing him down to someone, I think Fred. It's a bit wobbley handing B down.

No room at the inn

Tonight Fred and I will be sleeping in the manger. We have a king sized bed. Yes, those are animals end to end. Here is how bedtime went tonight:
"Just one more aminal."
"You need to say goodnight to Gwinch."
"You forgot Ewaphant."
"Tuck me in."
"Tuck my kitty in."
"B needs his aminal."
"Tuck carebear in."
I didn't get much of a word in tonight. Except to say, "THERE IS NO MORE ROOM IN THE BED!"

Knock him down!

It's wayyyy to early!

Can you imagine an old B, pushing his little walker? He'll probably have that much hair. Hopefully he won't be as short though.

Noella, this song is for you

Today Noella would have turned 28.

If you were lucky enough to know Nella, you would know what a beautiful spirit she was. She looked deep into you and loved you for the person you are. Somehow, she always knew what you really were thinking. Noella drew people to her; she had a radiant soul and it shone.

When you were around Noella, you could feel her energy wrap around you.
Noella loved and she was loved. When you love someone, they will always live.
I don't even have to close my eyes and I can still smell her essence. I never liked the smell of cigarettes, but for some reason I always loved the smell on her. Perhaps it was just because it always felt so good holding on to her.
Noella loved watching fireflies. I remember one night, she took Ivy and me to her favorite spot to see them glow. Noella was like a firefly, glowing brightly and free. Every one in a while, I see Noella flickering on Earth.
One night, we stayed up all night to look at falling stars. Noella shone more brightly than any star in the sky. Every time I see a falling star, I remember Noella.
Happy Birthday, Noella.

Look who is in the intro!

Yes, that's my special little girl!

Vote, it's patriotic!

Today is New Hampshire's primaries. The sun is out. If it weren't for all this snow, you would think that it's just another Springtime day. Can it be a metaphor of what is to come? Let's hope so!
A progression of M and her patriotism:

Even S'ang wants in the action.

Okay, so they can't really vote, but we all know who M has her vote.
It's funny, while watching TV the other day, an ad for Clinton and M said, "Go Obama!" There was no mention of Obama. I didn't know that she paid that much attention to the campaigns.

Happy New Year!

It's not New Year's until you get a kiss;

(although this pictures were from yesterday)
Are you crazy, wake up my kids at midnight?
What is New Year's without the traditional black eye peas?

Black eyed pea enchiladas with white bean garlic sauce that is.

Something that I came up with on a whim.
Filling
1 cup black eyed peas cooked
1 broccoli stalk
1 broccoli stalk
1 cup corn
1 onion
2 cloves garlic
2 chili peppers
tomato paste
cilantro
lime

Finely chop broccoli, onions, garlic and pepper. Sautee peppers. Add onions, broccoli and garlic and cook until broccoli is tender. Add the peas and corn. Add enough tomato paste to color the mix. Turn off heat. Throw in cilantro. Squeeze some lime.

Warm corn tortillas and fill. Pour sauce over it

White bean sauce
2 cloves garlic
1 can white beans
water
salt
paprika

blend beansin food processor. Slowly add water until there is a creamy consistency, thicker than hummus but thinner than soup.

Bake in oven on 350 for 30 minutes.

Here is to a peaceful New Year!!!

29 December 2007

You can't do that in Texas!

Beautiful day to play in the snow!

We went up to the high school today in search of hills to sled down. No hills, but we found lots of drifts to plow down. Fred was a bit grumpy to begin with, but sledding is the perfect remedy.

Some family fun fotos

Like always, M tried to eat the snow.

M goes solo

Basic math:
Sledding = Happy Toddler = Great nap

Even S'ang wanted on in the action.

If I had this much fun, I cannot wait to go inner tubing on the golf course! Bigger hills!

Old Year's Conclusion

Ei, you challenged me yet again.

I remember the first time I heard the phrase, "turning over a new leaf." I was in fourth grade, I believe. We were rehearsing for a school play. One of the songs was about being on "easy street" was a myth and something about starting anew.
I am reminded that every day is a fresh start each time I see fallen leaves.

But what is the purpose of turning over a new leaf when the leaf falls from the same tree? It is not about renewal, like sheets of snow falling covering the old dirty snow. Underneath all that fresh snow, the past remains.

A tree can be shaped; its branches can be trimmed. Branches continue to grow to make new leaves. What branches grew for me for 2007? What branches can I trim?

This year's biggest lesson comes from The Four Agreements. Don't take anything personally. My mother used to tell me over and over again that I was in charge of my emotions. I used to think she said this to blame me because my feelings were hurt. My reality is not theirs.

Pooh and Noella lit my path to my home birth. Let things flow, remember to breathe, it's okay to lose control sometimes. Noella still reminds me just take life in. I don't find it ironic at all that she died on the Ides of March.

When Noella died, I kept reflecting on a particular night. I had a guy over. Noella came into my room crying. I held her as she cried while the guy sulked and eventually rolled over and went to sleep. I am glad that I chose Noella over him. I try to be a good friend to all my friends. Do you know the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch? There is song with the lyrics "I gave a piece to.." I feel like that sometimes. I will happily give pieces to my friends, but I cannot give away everything. I have to watch who I give to because one day, someone will take off and run.

Fred is my rock. He pushes me to the limits I didn't know I have and holds onto me when I need him most.

I learned to trust. I don't have always have to be strong. It's okay to surrender to life.

I am a mother. I may not be the mother I want to be. I lose my temper, I yell and I have hit in anger. I am ashamed to admit it, but I always let M know that I make mistakes too. Mommies and daddies have to say their are sorry too. I have swallowed my words. M has had more than enough popsicles, cupcakes and TV. Every day, I try to do better than the day before. Parenting a strong-willed toddler is like endurance training. Hell, parenting any child is like endurance training. At the end of the day, my children know that I love them. It is a promise I made to myself after I had M. My children will always know I love them.

I am still a messy person. I tried flylady. The only thing I learned from her is to make my bed, swish the loo, wipe down the sink and put on something nice in the morning. Despite that, I don't do that every day. I don't know if it's laziness or apathy. Maybe a little of both. Before I became a mother of two, M and I used to do all these neat little projects. Now she is lucky if she gets to paint or color. I am constantly collecting art supplies with the intentions of doing fun and creative pieces with her.

I am still superstitious. Have you ever seen A Very Long Engagement? I play that game as well: "If the bird lands on the tree that means I'll get my wish." I eat my fortune cookie before reading my fortune. I knock on wood, throw salt over my shoulder, try not to jinx myself by speaking too soon, look for symbolism in the mundane, and wish on falling stars.
